AVITOPIA - Birds of Argentina

Argentina stretches from the edge of the tropics over many degrees of latitude to the edge of the Antarctic zone. In addition, different altitudes (0 - 6959m), wind conditions and ocean currents create a very differentiated pattern of climatic areas throughout the country, so that a very extraordinary variety of habitats has formed. As a result, Argentina is a country with one of the highest avidiversities in the world. Many species are endemic; BirdLife International has therefore declared 10 Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs) for Argentina, which are home to birds with a restricted range. The rich bird life is preserved through various protective measures, so 36 national parks have been established, which are supplemented by a large number of public and private nature reserves. Some of the areas have been declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. BirdLife International has identified the areas that are particularly important for the conservation of bird life and has declared over 260 areas as Important Birding and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs).
