Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a native North American perennial wildflower widely recognized as the quintessential milkweed species, often forming extensive colonies through its spreading rhizomes in open, sunny habitats such as fields, roadsides, pastures, ditches, and disturbed areas across much of the eastern United States and southern Canada. This robust herbaceous plant typically reaches heights of 3 to 5 feet, featuring stout, hairy stems and large, opposite, oblong leaves that exude a milky latex when broken. From early to mid-summer, it produces rounded clusters (umbels) of fragrant, pink to purplish flowers that attract a diverse array of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The plant's inflated, bumpy seed pods mature in late summer to fall, splitting open to release numerous flat seeds attached to silky parachutes for wind dispersal. Ecologically significant, Common Milkweed serves as a primary host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars, providing essential foliage for larval development while its nectar-rich blooms support adult butterflies and other insects, contributing to broader pollinator conservation efforts in gardens, meadows, and naturalized landscapes.

  • Pink Blooms: Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) will produce clusters of light pink flowers. They can be seen along dirt roads and naturalized settings.
  • Butterfly Garden: Common Milkweed will attract pollinators to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees, lady bugs and more. Pairs well with Coneflower, Rudbeckia, Coreopsis and other perennials.
  • Helps Monarchs: Milkweed is the primary food source of the Monarch Butterfly! By planting Asclepias (Milkweed) you can help these endangered butterflies thrive.
  • Perennial Flowers: Milkweed is grown as a perennial flowering plant. Each plant will grow quickly and establish a root system to return the following season.
  • Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.5" wide by 5" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness: All seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!
