Sleek bucking transformer with a durable stainless steel cover and grounded metal case! Equipped with two grounded outlets, it offers a choice between a 3% or 7% voltage drop, making it an essential piece of gear for vintage tube equipment. Here's why: Prior to the 1970's, household voltage was typically between 110 and 117 volts. As such, gear from that era was designed to run off mains voltage in that range. However, modern household voltage ranges from 120-125 volts, exceeding what vintage audio equipment was designed for. While a few extra volts might not seem significant, they are multiplied within the power supply, potentially adding 20-40 volts beyond the design limits. This can cause transformer failure, damage components, and reduction in tube and component life! As shown in the photo, this voltage reducer lowered the line voltage from 121V to 113V—around a 7% reduction. Simply plug your vintage electronics into the outlet for safer operation. The unit supports devices drawing up to 4 amps and includes a protective 4-amp fuse. Its metal housing is grounded via a three-wire power cord, and the full metal construction ensures durability. It's suggested to only operate one device off the transformer at a time. The top outlet provides about a 3% voltage drop, while the bottom delivers about a 7%. It’s not recommended to use both outlets simultaneously. For optimal performance, consider plugging the unit into a switched power strip to avoid continuous operation. Highly recommended for devices like the Dynaco ST-70, which were designed for 117V line voltage. Using this voltage reducer will help your transformer run cooler, prolong tube life, and ensure all voltages are closer to factory specifications.
